"One day when you're a mother, you'll get to make the rules." Oh how I longed for that day!
I was not a rule breaker growing up. In my Chinese American family, rules were very important. Without being the best rule follower, how else could you become the teacher's pet?
Now that I'm a mother, I am the greatest rule inventor in the world. "You can have 2 juices diluted with water a day." "Gummy vitamins come AFTER pjs and medicine, no more discussion!" And recently, "If you break this rule you will have NOTHING YOU WANT FOR THE REST OF THE DAY." I hope that doesn't sound as desperate as I was in actuality.
So, when Circle of Moms asked me for a parenting rule that moms should break, I had to think for a moment. What territory could I cede, without the lunatics taking over the asylum? And then I remembered, that when my children ask for something spontaneous, and I let go of my plans for an evening, unexpected joy can result.

CONGRATS to you!!! :)
ReplyDeleteThank you so much, BWMM!!
ReplyDeleteGreat piece on Circle of Moms, Patty! I so agree that sometimes saying yes when you would least expect to say yes is a magical thing. There's nothing better than seeing the giddy surprise in your children's eyes when their mom does something completely unexpected. Here's to keeping them guessing.
ReplyDeleteSpecifics are needed. I want to hear what fun was had. And I laughed when I read about the diluted juice; I finally let go of that one, but it still bugs me. My daughter was served a 24 oz mug of apple juice today & I counted sugar and calories in head.
ReplyDeleteI loved this piece! Sometimes when I let go a bit that is when the magic really happens! What a fun site Patty. I'm so glad I got to meet you yesterday at BlogHer, I am now following you and I look forward to reading more from you!!
ReplyDeleteThank you ladies, I am thrilled to have so many fabulous bloggers chiming in! I hope you all check out each other's work, I love you all. @Britta, love how you put it "giddy surprise" - think of how that might help in the romance dept as well :). @Kablooey, yes, the dinner picnic at the beach was dreamy, the girls collected twigs and shells peacefully FOR AN HOUR during sunset, never would have happened at home. @Kathy, the feeling is totally mutual - can't wait to dive into your life too!
